On October 19, 1901, at 2:30 pm the Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont flew his airship Number 6 around the Eiffel Tower.
He thus won the Deutsch de La Meurthe prize of 100 000 French Francs.
Santos-Dumont rewarded his workers half the prize and gave the remaining 25,000 francs to the poor of Paris.
